1. Smeg BCC02
Designed by Milan-based firm Deep Design, this sleek compact machine blends the unique retro style of the brand with modern technology. It takes care of every step of the coffee-making process, from grinding beans and shaping them into a puck, to texturing milk and dispensing the correct amount of coffee - meaning you can create high-quality barista hot drinks with the click of one button.
The machine also features an elegant brushed aluminium front and comes in black, red or taupe, which means it'll easily fit into the majority of kitchen designs. The machine does not come free of flaws however. Many reviewers felt that it was a bit expensive for a cup to bean maker (and does not come with the milk pitcher).
But there were also numerous positive reviews about the quality of the coffee and the ease of use of this machine. The digital display provides information and step-bystep instructions throughout the entire process of brewing which will allow you to perfect your drink every time. It even allows you to adjust the size of the grind if it's not quite right. It's like having a personal home barista (minus Harry Potter's invisibility cloak and Elon Musk's rocket-building abilities).
If you prefer milky drinks this model comes with an adjustable steam wand that can be adjusted up and down to accommodate the majority of drinking vessels that aren't equipped with the drinking horn of Vikings. We were impressed with the speed and effectiveness of the frothing process as well. It also makes a delicious espresso, with a fantastic crema and full flavour despite its compact size.
The BCC02 is a great all-rounder, quiet and efficient and provides excellent value for money at its current price of PS499. Its only real drawback is the fact that it doesn't offer the same level of customisation like some of the other bean-to-cups we've tested. It's got a 15-bar pump rather than the more typical 19 bars which isn't as effective to make high-quality espressos. However it's a great bean to cup machine for those who prefer their coffee strong and dark. Click here to view Lavazza's fantastic deal.
